Metalworking Lathe question by anonymous: Problem with lathe speed control device?
I have a small 7×12 mini metalworking lathe with a variable speed motor. I found out that the speed control device inside needs to be replaced. I already tried to replace some of the components inside but that did not do anything.
The speed control device has a number on the back that reads: SEIG-FC250JSMD. The best price for this speed controller is about and I don’t want to buy another one when the original one died so easily.
Is it possible that I can get a heavy duty one that is compatible with the same machine?
The instructions for the lathe do not say what the motor specifications are. The speed control device only has a label that says 110 volts.

Enclosed Gearbox for Better Performance without Gear Changes
The GHB-1340A combines one of Jet’s most popular lathes with an enclosed gearbox for better performance and large threading and feed capabilities with no gear changes.
The geared head engine lathes include hardened and ground gears in the headstock and gearbox; additionally, the headstock is constantly oiled during operation for smooth, consistent performance. For added convenience, the GHB-1340A also includes splined, not keyed shafts.
Powerful Motor and Versatile, Precision Ground Spindle
The GHB-1340A operates with a heavy-duty 2 HP, 1Ph, 230-volt motor that provides powerful performance. It also features a versatile D1-4 spindle that offers eight speeds ranging from 70 to 2000 RPM for flexibility and control.
The spindle is precision ground for accuracy and supported by high-quality tapered roller bearings. Additionally, apron-mounted spindle actuation controls feature an inch/metric dial for quick and easy measuring.
Durable and Flexible V-Bed, Carriage, and Slideway Design
The GHB-1340A features a v-way bed design that’s induction hardened for durability, with a gap bed section for larger diameter work. The compound and cross slide help eliminate backlash, and the carriage and slideways offer incorporated, adjustable gibs. Additionally, the tailstock may be offset for turning tapers and includes an inch-metric graduated quill.

Why would a half dead center be used apposed to a full dead center, when using a center is neccessary for long work pieces.

You use a half centre in te tailstock to be able to machine radially down to the shaft centre or piece of work in the lathe

Metalworking Lathe question by anonymous: Metalworking lathe does not work?
I have a Cummins 7×12 mini metal lathe. It is a great machine but the motor speed controller has died. The motor on the lathe only runs at full speed or sometimes won’t run at all. The motor will run normal for a while but then it will die without blowing the fuse. I replaced the rheostat and both MOSFET transistors already and nothing has changed. I don’t want to try to replace anything on the speed control anymore because of how easy the machine broke when the problems started happening. I was machining aluminum stock with a sharp cutter when the cutter took to deep of a cut and got stuck around the workpiece. The motor instantly shut down and I figured all that had happened was that the fuse had failed. I replaced the 4amp fuse with a new one and it seemed alright for a while. Then a few minutes later, the machine was going full speed and blew another fuse.
Now, I want to replace the entire speed control but not spend 0. Can I possibly modify a wood router speed control?

Well, as you know, wood routers run MUCH faster than metal lathes.
Now that doesn’t exclude your being able to use the controller from the router, but it doesn’t mean it’s a slam dunk, either.
We simply do not have enough information to difinitively say whether you can use your router controller for your lathe – we would need more information about each of the motors in question.
